How to Choose a Location for your Engagement Shoot

Excited to share a blog post today with a three tips for choosing the perfect location for your engagement photos. Hopefully these can help you get started with the process of thinking through where to have your own engagement session!

1. Think about your interests and personalities

Incorporate who you are into your session. If you love hiking or spending time in the outdoors, consider a park or location where you can get some beautiful landscapes as a backdrop. If you like the city or a more urban feel, think about a nearby city or town with lots of cool buildings to shoot in.

2. Make a list of your favorite locations as a couple

Was your first date at a cute coffee shop? Do you have a spot that you spent a lot of time together throughout your relationship? This could be a park, a beach, or a downtown area that you think of as your spot. This can be a great place to start when thinking through a location for an engagement session. Having a connection with a certain location can add another layer to your engagement session story. You’ll be able to look back on these images and remember all of the times you spent at this location.

3. Check in with your photographer!

Once you have done steps one + two, check in with your photographer for their input! They can help you narrow it down to the location based on the time of your session and the season your shoot will be in. If you are feeling stumped, they can also give you a few of their favorite spots for you to start thinking about. They can take your ideas and help you find the perfect location.

Treat the engagement session like a date night! This session is all about capturing who you are in this moment of being in love, so the more comfortable you feel with your location, the more your unique connection will shine through in your photos.

BONUS TIP:

Research the location that you are interested in and make sure you have permission to shoot your engagement session there. You may be required to obtain a photography permit or pay a fee to shoot at that particular location. Many Orange County Parks, Beaches, and National Parks require a permit for photography, and it’s helpful to have this information beforehand so you can work with your photographer to obtain the correct permits with plenty of time before your session.

Rose + Jaime - The Riverbed Farm Anaheim Wedding Photography

Rose + Jaime were married at The Riverbed Farm in Anaheim, California this May. The Riverbed Farm is a full functioning sustainable urban farm, where they grow organic vegetables, fish, and eggs to benefit the local neighborhood. I shot a wedding here a few years ago (Amber + Alex!), and loved being able to return—it’s the sweetest space for an intimate, backyard style wedding.

Rose got ready at a nearby hotel, where she spent a low key morning with a few of her friends getting her hair + make up done. We headed over to the farm just before their ceremony was set to begin.

Rose + Jaime had so many special details. They had some gorgeous vintage rentals (an amazing planning for the day) created by Thrifted Sister Events that set the scene and provided a space for guests to hang out. The florals by Poppy Lavendar Florals complimented the garden perfectly. When their guests arrived at the venue, there was an ice cream cart to enjoy by Carmela Ice Cream. After the ceremony, we took some photos around the farm, while their guests enjoyed yard games like cornhole + giant jenga and connect 4.

Their reception was so much fun! They had an In N Out food truck bring burgers for all their guests, and a taco bar by Maria’s Tacos for dinner. Whiskey + Wildflowers—a bar in a vintage trailer—provided drinks all night. For dessert they had a variety of delicious cookies + pastries from Portos Bakery, and a beautiful cake decorated with daisies by Lincoln Bakery. They spent the rest of the evening mingling with their guests, dancing (thanks to Vox DJs), and enjoying all of the delicious food + drinks from their vendors. Enjoy the images below!

Alexandra + Ian - Beverly Hills Courthouse Wedding Photography

Alexandra + Ian were married at the Beverly Hills Courthouse in May. They chose to keep it small and sweet with just a few of their family at their ceremony on Friday afternoon. We took a few photos outside the courthouse and in the hallway while we waited for their names to be called. Afterward, we headed over to the Beverly Hills City Hall, and to Beverly Gardens Park to take a few more photos of the two of them.

The next day they hosted a big dinner in Laguna Beach with their family and friends to celebrate. It was so special to be with them at their little elopement on Friday. Enjoy the photos!

Hunter + Morgyn - Catalina Island Proposal Photography

Hunter contacted me a few weeks before he proposed to Morgyn on Catalina Island, asking if I would help him set up a proposal at Buena Vista Point overlooking the city of Avalon. We took the Catalina Express over in the morning, got the spot all set up, and then waited for Hunter + Morgyn to arrive.

Morgyn was so surprised that she couldn’t contain her smiles + laughter. She said yes & the crowd of tourists at the overlook erupted into cheers. We spent a little more time taking a few portraits overlooking the beautiful views, and then Hunter + Morgyn were off to lunch and to celebrate the rest of the day as a newly engaged couple!
